Presentation

This persistant hum is like the light and shadows of a large open landscape in movement. A perceptual window that opens directly onto a continually updated field of emotional possibilities.

We are constantly allured to the always on culture of the digital. Virtual worlds that flow seamlessly in and out of our physical states and that seek to capitalise on our limited resources. Attention is one of those limited resources and our capacity for attention is what we are losing in this current climate. Attention is what we need for understanding, for learning, for feeling, for being. It is our vital source for navigating a forever more complex World. To take our attention elsewhere, to divert it, is to disarm its energy. Such diversions weaken our capacity to be in the present, to hold that vital state of concentration that can unleash thoughts for our positive advancement and active being. To divert, is indeed to be led astray. One of the consequences, and indeed paradoxes, of this always on culture is that we are more often than not, turned off.

R_004 is part of a series of artistic works that have taken root directly from thoughts on this particular plight. They are therefore in part a response to contemporary Western society where data flows in a liquid manner and we become submerged in its omnipresence. R_004 is a single audio track that was recorded in one sitting using custom modular synthesis software. It was conceived purposefully as a means to practice and explore a reduced repertoire of sound composition and to elicit a state of attentive listening.
Drone is a mode of music that demands focus. Like a monk seeks breath as a guide in meditation, my intention is to reduce sound to its essentials, tone and timbre, therefore letting sound be my guide in attentive listening. The experience of composing this body of work has proven a positive one and each listening has brought fresh feelings and at times a profound sense of the spiritual. These sounds quite simply resonate with my very being.
